CHILE: Corruption scandals tarnish clean-cut image

An opinion poll published in the rightwing daily El Mercurio on 14 November found that more than 61% of respondents said that corruption is widespread in Chile, while 65.3% said the measures taken by President Michelle Bachelet to curb it were insufficient. The domestic perspective is in sharp contrast with Chile's rating as the least corrupt country in Latin America, according to Transparency International, and follows a spate of scandals that have rocked the ruling Concertación coalition.
